Letters from an Unwind- Writing Activity
In Chapter 19 of Unwind, we meet Sonia, a seemingly cantankerous, old lady who hides Unwinds in the secret basement of her Thrift store and Pawn shop. We also meet Hayden, a child from an affluent family who is being unwound because his bitter parents are going through a divorce and cannot agree on custody. So, if neither one can have Hayden to him or herself, no one will get him. Mai comes from a family hoping to have a boy. Unfortunately, she is the fourth girl. Then there is Roland, a boeuf from an abusive home. His mother took his stepfather’s side. Each of them, as well as Connor and Risa, has the opportunity to write one last letter before leaving Sonia’s shop. Sonia instructs them to write a letter to someone they love, or at least to someone who needs to hear what he or she has to say. In it, they are to say everything that NEEDS to be said. Your job today is to write your own Unwind letter. You are going to write as if you are in Connor’s or Risa’s shoes (or Hayden, Mai, or Roland’s). You don’t know if you’ll be unwound or if you’ll manage to survive until your 18th birthday. Life is pretty tough right now. Of course, in reality, you aren’t being unwound, but think about your life so far- the good, the bad, the ugly, and the pretty. Truly, that is exactly what Connor does when he writes his letter. He starts off angry but ends up reminiscing and remembering all of the good at a time in his life when it isn’t that easy to think good thoughts. As Sonia said, “We move in and out of darkness and light all of our lives (111).” Use your letter as your chance to reminisce and remember both the darkness and the light. Address it to whomever you choose. Be thoughtful with this letter. Include a minimum of 2 bad or ugly memories as well as a minimum of 3 good or pretty ones. You may do more. If you write very personal things but are worried, do not be; I will not make you share this one with the class J Unwind , Part 5 Reading WorkUse the link here to open a Google Doc with questions about Part 5.
